Australia 2012 – the big trip

When I moved to Canada 5 years ago, I knew life would be very different from then on, but it didn’t really strike home until I went back for a visit in November. Looking at the places I’d been before with fresh eyes was fascinating, inspiring and somehow comforting to know that nothing had really changed (especially the lousy TV). It’s still nearly impossible to get a parking space in a shopping centre, it’s still hot in summer, and there are still an insane amount of gum trees. Even Tony Greig was still alive, which I commented on at the time – sadly he passed away after my return to Canada. For nearly a month my husband and I kicked back and watched the cricket, visited with family and friends, played with my cat, went to the beach, went for a few drives and swam in the pool. I was really happy to get away from that accent by the time we returned, but when I look at the photos I would go back in a second for another visit, if only they’d make that flight a lot shorter.

I had to go on my month-long trip minus my D800 and my ultrawide lens, so all I took was my D300, an old 18-70mm kit lens, my 70-200mm (for photos of my cat) and a fisheye. I missed the ultrawide terribly for my landscape shots but I made do with what I had. I also threw in my Olympus waterproof compact camera and my GoPro.

The following photos are some highlights from the ocean, the farm, and the exploring. You’ll get the idea.

I was watching this couple and the girl ran in for a kiss. The portrait photographer in me had to catch the moment.
